New railway in a hilly environment

Gerstaberg is the northernmost part of Ostlänken, the new double-track railway that will improve connections between Järna and Linköping. As the landscape is hilly, we will use several different construction methods to ensure the railway blends into the surroundings. In the north, Ostlänken connects to the existing railway through a portal bridge over the existing railway. The project will also include cutting - where the track is lowered below the existing ground level, embankment - where the track is raised above the existing ground level, and bridges. A large part of the work will be carried out close to the active railway to minimize intrusion and impact on areas worthy of protection.

A new switching center

The contract also includes a new switching station and two new high-speed switches for speeds over 160 km/h. The switching station will connect Ostlänken's overhead power lines to the existing main line, ensuring that the voltage is evenly distributed between the tracks to prevent overhead wire breaks. It will also ensure that trains on Ostlänken receive sufficient power to accelerate and reach higher speeds.
